This is just going to be a more quick and simple blog today. However, it is over one of the most common questions I get. Is heat really bad for hair? Heat damage probably is the most common form of hair damage I see. Heat damage causes your hair to be brittle, dry, and more prone to more breakage in general.

The cuticle is the outermost layer of your hair. Every day over-use/too high of heat temperature causes damage to the cuticle. Once the cuticle is damaged the inner cortex of your hair is then left more exposed which can lead to even more severe damage. Everyone does usually have at least some light damage to their hair just from daily and environmental factors. This time of year it is also more common to have more dry hair. This can cause frizz which may want to make you use more heat on your hair. This however may just cause more damage to your hair. Another problem that too much heat can cause is faded color or discolored hair from the heat.

We all do tend to use some heat on our hair at times. Some more than others and I am never going to tell someone to never use heat. There are just some tips for when using heat on your hair that can help protect your hair from unnecessary damage.

  • Try to limit heat so that you aren't using it every day

  • Use a heat protectant to help protect your hair

  • Use a lower heat. Most of the time it is ideal to stay under 350 degrees (sometimes more or less heat is needed for someones hair of course but try to keep it lower)

  • Do not use a hot tool other than a blowdryer on wet hair

  • Use a moisture/bond building mask to help repair the hair and add moisture

Luckily there have been so many new hairstyles lately that don't require heat! However hopefully these tips helps to keep your hair healthy when you do need to use a hot tools.
